The Carving Heritage of Val Gardena
- The tradition of wood carving in Val Gardena (Groden) dates to the early 1600s, born from long Alpine winters and an abundance of local linden and Swiss stone pine
- Artisans developed the craft as a cottage industry, passing techniques from parent to child across generations for over 400 years
- By the 18th century, Val Gardena carvers were trading their work across Europe — their reputation for religious sculpture unmatched
- Today, Ortisei remains the heart of this living tradition, home to workshops, schools, and master carvers who continue the legacy
