Saint James the Pilgrim, known as Santiago de Compostela, stands as one of Christianity's most venerated apostles. Originally a fisherman called by Jesus alongside his brother John, James became a devoted disciple and witnessed pivotal moments in Christ's ministry. Following the Crucifixion, he traveled to Spain to spread the Gospel, earning the title "the Greater" to distinguish him from another apostle James. His feast day, celebrated on July 25th, commemorates his martyrdom under King Herod Agrippa around 44 AD—making him the first apostle to achieve sainthood through martyrdom. James became the patron saint of pilgrims, travelers, and Spain itself, with his shrine in Santiago de Compostela becoming one of Christianity's most important pilgrimage destinations throughout the medieval period and beyond. This hand-carved statue, meticulously crafted by ULPE artisans in Ortisei, Italy, captures James in his iconic pilgrim form—staff in hand, adorned with the scallop shell symbol of pilgrimage. Each piece reflects centuries of Italian woodcarving tradition, transforming raw wood into a spiritual heirloom worthy of passing through generations. Available in multiple sizes, this devotional sculpture serves as both a meaningful religious tribute and a treasured family keepsake that honors the enduring legacy of Saint James the Pilgrim.
